Since 1975, the St. Louis Area Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (CoCAN) has been supporting advocacy and education to improve the lives of children. The mission of CoCAN is to promote advocacy, education and legislative action in order to improve the lives of children at risk of abuse and neglect.

PURPOSE

  • Provide networking opportunities for all professionals and community organizations working with children and families
  • Promote awareness of public, private and community organizations as well as resources in the areas of child abuse and neglect.
  • Foster coordinated legislative and administrative advocacy on behalf of children.
  • Provide education on the prevention, identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

2016 GOALS

Legislative/Advocacy Committee:

  • Participate in the policy/legislative issues pertinent to child abuse and neglect (CAN) for the St. Louis area.
  • Appraise COCAN members and local policy makers of the major legislative issues around CAN at the national, state and local levels.

Education Committee:

  • Provide high-quality training focusing on "High Quality Service Delivery from A-Z" to child welfare professionals.
  • Enhance participation of community resources in the training process.
  • Utilize attendee evaluations to continuously improve training offerings.

Membership Committee:

  • Support our current members, and identify areas for future growth.

Public Relations Committee:

  • Collaborate with other CoCAN committees and community partners to increase awareness of CoCAN’s mission, and of advocacy and training opportunities, utilizing email, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Continue to update and improve our website to accurately reflect our goals and activities, and be a service to our members.
